Cadillac Parade in Barton Vermont

I had the pleasure of working for GM-Cadillac at the 144th Orleans County Fair in the scenic Northeast Kingdom village of Barton, Vermont as they attempted to break the Guinness World Records of the longest Cadillac Parade in history. They did it with 298 cars participating Wednesday August 17, 2011. The following photo is of a 1957 silver Cadillac Biarritz as it sits in line before the parade. The old record was 102 set in Europe a few years ago. It was a crazy day! I left the house at 5:45 AM and arrived in Barton around 7:30 AM. I had to stop in Glover at the Busy Bee for some breakfast before arriving at Lake Region High School in the fog to meet and greet the early arrivals.

I met with Lorie Seadale, the organizer of the event, and she helped me figure out what was happening. Henry Leland was the founder of Cadillac in 1902 and he is from Barton. His relatives dressed the part and played out his image throughout the day. You can see Doug Leland and his wife Sally riding in a pink Cadillac leading the parade as it wound down Route 5 to the Olreans County Fairgrounds where the awards were presented. My job was to capture the event as a news story supply images to GM-Cadillac throughout the day. It wasn’t easy trying to navigate the parade on the only road to the fairgrounds. It was also difficult sending images to GM because of the lack of WiFi in the area. I had to battle traffic to go to and from the local library to post images. Hectic but fun!

The record was set and it was a beautiful day. I got home around 6PM and spent a few hours processing photos before finally hitting the sack around 11:30PM. Long day but one to remember. No matter how well I plan for shoots like this there is always a need for plan B, C, D . . .
